Do you gaze into your wardrobe, see tons of unworn clothes and want to run far away? Read on for five sustainable ways you can clear the clutter or make the most of what you own. 1. Take it to a tailor Whether too big, too boxy, too long or too tight, let someone else alter your garments into the perfect fit. Take clothing to a tailor or alteration shop and let the expert know what you want. Leave the garment in their capable hands for a few days and, like magic, your garment will now look like it has been made especially for you. Most requests are possible though some may be a challenge, for instance if there isn't enough excess fabric available to make a suit larger. Their small fee is way less expensive than buying a replacement garment. Reusing garments is kind to the environment too as it reduces our carbon footprint. Want to know whether to visit a tailor or alteration shop? Alterations are usually for simple jobs focusing on one area of the garment, for instance taking up the hem of jeans. Tailors are experts who work to create a custom-fit, for instance changing the size and fit of a suit in several places. 2. Rework it Rework, customise, upcycle - they all mean the same thing. Climate change is a big topic right now and so sustainable clothing will help reduce our carbon footprint, to protect our precious planet. Reworking can be as simple as adding some embellishments to express your personality or altering the garment yourself. Jeans too long and want to look edgy? Cut the hems of your jeans off! Dress that throws your body shape out of balance but you love its cut or print? Create a peplum skirt or puff sleeves and sew on. Reworking is not only kind to the environment, it's creative and a wonderful way to wear something unique that no one else will have. This dress is from a collection that an awesome friend and I collaborated on, featuring reworked and handmade garments with a punk vibe. We created a tartan half-peplum over one hip and embellished with leather boob zips. 3. Donate it Don't have the time or desire to alter your clothing? Make space at home, be sustainability and support the causes that matter most to you by donating clothes you don't wear to charity. Not only will you make physical space, you'll also make mental space when you let go of things you don't wear, don't feel good in or don't actually like. Check the condition before donating - would you buy it in a shop as it is? If it's full of holes, stains or funky smells then the charity shop likely won't be able to sell it, so give it a wash or stitch up any tiny holes first, if necessary. Charity shops rely on donations and are grateful for everything they receive though they are still run as businesses so can usually only sell garments that are in good condition. 4. Sell it Definitely don't want it but can't bear to just give it away? Maybe you spent a ton purchasing it or it's vintage and you know it's worth a lot. Selling is a way to get money back though the drawback is that it can take ages for things to sell online, so your unwarted garms will take up space at home in the meantime. It can take time to research the best platforms for your needs, the most relevant keywords and a suitable price, as well as time taken to pack and post. 5. Wear it anyway Do you have garments that draw attention to body parts you're self-conscious of, add weight to bigger areas or that create unflattering silhouettes? While certain styles will suit you better than others, with confidence and conviction you can proudly wear it all anyway. The main thing is about how you feel in a garment. If it's unflattering but you feel cool AF then who cares what other people think. It's liberating when we can own our bodies just as they are, making our wonderful quirks into a feature and wearing what we feel like. An example is the gorgeous girl below. From a Stylist's POV, the shape of the dress doesn't best balance her lovely body shape but she is confident and has styled it with accessories that give it an edge. As long as we believe in what we're wearing, others will too and if they don't then who cares! Got so many clothes that you don't know what to rework, donate or get altered?
